Sequoia / Kings Canyon

Look closely. That little spot in front of the trees is me.

This past weekend, after Fresno RELOAD, I took two days to go explore the nearby Kings Canyon and Sequioa National Parks. I had considered camping, but I chickened out when I heard about the overnight temps in the 20s, so I got a cute little heated tent cabin. I had a wonderful time. Kings Canyon is truly a rival to Yosemite Valley with similar steep granite cliffs. I hiked a loop around a medow where I saw a little bit of fall color, and I took a tour of the nearby Boyden Caves. I'd like to go back some day and backpack the Rae Lakes Loop that begins at the end of Kings Canyon.
The next day I drove through Sequioa, where I stopped to walk among the big trees and I took a tour of the Crystal Caves. Click this picture to see more pictures on Flickr.
Everybody thought I was crazy to go alone. I greatly enjoyed the solitude, but I also met some interesting people from all over the world. Also, it was really good for me to go someplace beyond the reach of internet and cellphones which forced me to truly slow down and relax. What a great trip!
